Yeşim Arat

Yeşim Arat (Yale College, BA 1978, Princeton University, Department of Politics, PhD 1983) is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. She has numerous articles on questions of women’s political participation and Islam in Turkey and books entitled, The Patriarchal Paradox: Women Politicians in TurkeyTurkey (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1989),  Rethinking Islam and Liberal Democracy: Islamist Women in Turkish Politics (State University of New York Press, 2005). The book Violence against women in Turkeyshe coauthored with Ayse Gul Altınay won the 2008 Pen Duygu Asena Award in Turkey.

 

Yeşim Arat is a founding member of KADER (The Association for the Support and Training of Women Candidates, 1997) and a member of the General Council of the Women’s Library and Information Center (since 1997). She was the Provost of the Bogazici University from 2008-2012.
