As SU Gender, we continued our annual international conference series in 2017 with the “Gender and Peace Conference.” The conference took place between May 6-7 at Minerva Palace and was held in honor of Cynthia Cockburn, who has made groundbreaking research on gender, militarism, and peace.
Over 100 academics, researchers and activists who work on the topic from Europe, America, the Middle East and various parts of Turkey took part in the conference, which had 10 sessions and lasted two days. In the sessions, around 30 speakers gave talks on the topics such as the women's struggle for peace around the world, the situation in Turkey and Syria, politics, education, justice and memory.
The conference began with a video recorded specifically for the meeting by Cynthia Cockburn and opening speeches by Ayşe Betül Çelik and Ayşe Gül Altınay. At the conference, one of the important names in gender studies, Cynthia Enloe, as well as Vanessa Farr, who was active in the UN peace process, also spoke. In addition, people who have made crucial research and publications in the field such as Rela Mazali, Elissa Helms, Maria Hadjipavlou, Arlene Avakian and Andrea Petö also contributed to the conference with presentations.
