The panel “Women in Senior Management: Experiences from the University” brought together academics in senior management.
The panel, organized by SU Gender to discuss and encourage women’s leadership in academia, began with the introductory remarks of SU Gender Director Ayşe Gül Altınay and Sabancı University Vice President Şirin Tekinay. In her speech, Ayşe Gül Altınay underlined the historical significance of this panel and highlighted the importance of the presence of women in senior management.
Şirin Tekinay noted that there will be an income raise of 12 billion dollars in the world with the achievement of gender equality. She underscored the importance of developing national policies in this area, especially of focusing on policies regarding the increase of the number of women in senior management in universities.
Other speakers in the panel were Gülsüm Sağlamer, the President of Istanbul Technical University between 1996-2004, Sondan Durukanoğlu Feyiz, Vice President of Kadir Has University, Şule Kut, the President of Okan University between 2010-2018, and Gülay Barbarosoğlu, the President of Boğaziçi University between 2012-2016.
The speakers dwelled upon the contributions that the presence of women in senior management makes on academic life. Sharing their own experiences in management, the panelists highlighted the importance of gender-sensitive institutional and societal mechanisms as well as the increase in the number of men who encourage and support women’s promotion.
