Sabancı University Gender Forum and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences hosted “Young KAGIDER Days” on Tuesday, February 21st, 2012. The first leg of the project, which was developed with the support of JP Morgan on the theme of “Strong Woman, Strong Family, Advanced Society, Developing Turkey” was initiated at Sabancı University’s Tuzla campus. Around 200 Sabancı University students participated in the event. The panel was moderated by Selma Akdoğan, Deputy President of KAGIDER, and included speeches by Meral Eredenk, CEO of AvivaSA, Prof. Dr. Bengi Semerci, Yasemin Horasan, national basketball player, and Serhat Görgün from Galata Business Angels. Prof. Dr. Bengi Semerci, psychiatrist specializing on youth and adults, emphasized the importance of women’s participation into the workforce. After reminding the audience that getting married is promoted as a career to young girls, she underlined that motherhood is not a career. Meral Eredenk advised to the youth that they shall not see life as just marriage, just work, or just leisure, but instead they shall balance different aspects of their lives. In his speech, Serhat Görgün highlighted the significance of entrepreneurship for Turkey’s development and reiterated the role of women entrepreneurs. Yasemin Horasan described how she manages her own company as a basketball player. After the panel, Pınar Kapralı Görsev gave a presentation titled “My First Idea My First Enterprise” and informed the students on different aspects of entrepreneurship. She answered the questions raised by the audience together with her business partner Piraye Antika. Pınar Kapralı Görsev’s presentation included topics such as the five requirements for entrepreneurship, the formula to successful enterprises, the question of how to start a business, ideas and the team, business models and practices, and the creation of a business plan.
