Museums and memory sites play a key role in shaping and transforming collective memory, as well as in accessible knowledge production on collective pasts and presents. Yet, despite the critical knowledge production on gender, sexuality and memory in the past decades and the development of feminist pedagogy, many museums and memory sites remain uncritical of conventional gender roles, contributing to the further reproduction of gender based norms and inequalities.
Feminist Pedagogy: Museums, Memory Sites, Practices of Remembrance Conference
October 18-20, 2018 Istanbul
The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers, museum administrators, educators and activists to analyze the existing and potential contributions of feminist pedagogy in museums, memory sites and practices of remembrance. Possible paper topics include (but are not limited to):
* The use of feminist concepts, theories and debates in the field of collective memory and its representations in museums, memory sites and practices of remembrance,
* The role feminist pedagogy has played / can potentially play in the transformation of collective memories, particularly in relation to the representation of difficult past experiences in sites and practices of memory,
* New methods and practices in remembrance that incorporate an intersectional analysis of gender and sexuality (with particular attention to class, “race”, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and dis/ability),
* The particular interventions of women and gender museums and memory sites in (pedagogies of) collective memory,
* Alternative methods for (visually) representing collective and individual violence, conflict and war in museums and memory sites, without adopting and reproducing the gaze of the perpetrator, and further victimizing the victims,
* The use of participatory methods in museums and memory sites in creating debate and awareness on the gendering of collective memory,
* The potentials of interactive display methods and other related technologies in critically analyzing the transmission of gendered memories and traumas across generations,
* The contributions (and limitations) of multidisciplinary data collection and analysis in developing a critical understanding of gendered memory practices,
* Good practices that make museum spaces and memory sites physically and thematically accessible to children and adolescents, the elderly, and people with different abilities,
* Good practices in the use of feminist pedagogy for social peace in museums, memory sites and practices of remembrance.
Papers may be presented in English or Turkish.
Interested scholars, researchers, museum administrators, educators, activists and civil society workers are asked to send a 250-word abstract of their paper along with a short CV to feministpedagogy2018@gmail.com by June 20, 2018.
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by an academic committee and applicants will be notified of the results by July 20, 2018.
