Panel “Women in Senior Management Positions: Experiences from the University” was held
Ayşe Gül Altınay, Director of SU Gender, and Şirin Tekinay, Vice President of Sabancı University, gave the opening speeches of the panel organized by SU Gender to discuss and encourage female leadership in academia. Ayşe Gül Altınay underlined the historical significance of this panel and emphasized that women's being in senior management positions made a huge difference.
Şirin Tekinay said in her speech that there would be an income increase of 12 billion dollars when gender equality was globally achieved. She emphasized the importance of developing national policies in this regard, especially focusing on policies for the increase in the number of women in senior management positions of universities.
The panel speakers included Gülsüm Sağlamer, Former President of ITU in 1996-2004, Sondan Durukanoğlu Feyiz, Acting President of Kadir Has University, Şule Kut, Former President of Okan University in 2010-2018, and Gülay Barbarosoğlu, Former President of Boğaziçi University in 2012-2016.
The speakers focused on how much women could contribute to academic life when they filled the senior management positions of universities. Talking about their own management experiences, the speakers underlined the importance of increasing the number of men who encourage and support the promotion of women, as well as gender-sensitive institutional and social mechanisms.
