Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award is an article award given by SU Gender in memory of our colleague, friend, sociologist Dicle Koğacıoğlu, who passed away in 2009, with the support of Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The aim of the award, which has been given since 2010, is to support gender-focused research on Turkey and to encourage young researchers.
About Şirin Tekeli:
Şirin Tekeli, who passed away in June 2017, left behind a rich legacy. In addition to her books Women and Sociopolitical Life (İletişim Publishing, 1982) that she wrote in 1978 as an associate professor at İstanbul University and Women in Turkey in the 1980s from the Perspective of Women (İletişim Publishing, 1990), which was one of the first interdisciplinary compilations of feminist women’s studies in Turkey, Şirin Tekeli pioneered the establishment of gender and women’s studies in Turkey and in the Turkish language through the feminist articles that she wrote in Somut newspaper in the early 1980s, the translations of more than 20 books focusing on women and democracy from French and English, and the articles that she wrote in international academic journals.
Şirin Tekeli has also been a trailblazer for and a promoter of many steps for the institutionalization and empowerment of civil society, the feminist movement, and gender equality policies. She played an active role in the petition campaign demanding the enforcement of The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) between 1985 and 1990, the Women’s Solidarity March against Violence, the Kâriye Festival, the Purple Needle Campaign, and the Civil Law reforms. She was among the founders of the Human Rights Association in 1986, the Women’s Library and Information Center Foundation in 1989, the Purple Roof Women's Shelter Foundation in 1990, the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly in 1993, and the Association for Support of Women Candidates (KA-DER) in as well as the Women Initiative for Peace (WINPEACE) by Greek and Turkish Women in 1997.
Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) will hold Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Awards Conference, which will be organized for the 12th time this year to the memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu, a sociologist, from 13.00 to 17.00 on Saturday, December 25. The conference will be online.
The winners of the Şirin Tekeli Research Awards, organized by Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) in memory of Şirin Tekeli, who conducted pioneering work on democracy, academic freedom, gender equality, and feminism, were announced at an online award ceremony and conference.
