Didem Danışis a sociologist whose teaching and research activities evolve around topics related to migrations, cities and demography. She teaches at Galatasaray University and is the founder of the Association for Migration Research (GAR). In 2008, she received her PhD degree from EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales). This thesis was devoted to the analysis of the interaction between Iraqi transit migrants and refugees’ social networks and the reception politics. She stayed at Malmö University, Sweden as a visiting Ph.D. student in 2002-2003. She holds BA degrees in Political Science and Sociology from Boğaziçi University, and MA in Sociology from Middle Eastern Technical University. She has published extensively on migration, urbanization and social demography. She has also been involved in various research collaborations in Europe and the Middle East. She has taught as a visiting professor at various universities in France. Didem Danış’s research interests concentrate on migration politics, migrant networks, transnationalism and gender relations in the migratory processes. She is also focusing on the interactions between the cities and migrants, mechanisms of hospitability and the role of local actors in the refugee reception and integration.
