GEARING Roles project's second annual conference will be organized by Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence on November 9-10-11 under the title "Gender and Leadership in Higher Education and Research". As Leadership is one of the key areas we work on as we design and implement Gender Equality Plans (GEPs), we hope to discover what leadership with a gender equality perspective means from academic and civil society perspectives. Throughout the conference we will bring together feminist civil society leaders from Turkey, GEP implementing university representatives, and higher education and research institution leaders from around Europe. The conference will take place with online panels, roundtable discussions and a digital activism workshop for university students. By organizing this conference as the GEARING Roles project, we aim to create a space for knowledge and experience exchange for a better understanding of what leadership for gender equality should look like.
As SU Gender, our webinar international webinar series that focuses on sexual harassment, gender-based violence, diversity and inclusion within and outside the university continues in the new semester. In this series, we would like to share experiences with experts, researchers, and activists from different universities, research centers and NGOs, and learn from their expertise. The sixth of the webinar series will take place on October 21.
The Purple Certificate Program, which has been conducted within SU Gender for 13 years, was held online for the first time this year.A total of 57 teachers and faculty of education students from 28 different cities participated in the training held between 17-22 August 2020.
As SU Gender, we stand for the Istanbul Convention being fully and effectively implemented without compromise, in order to prevent violence against women and gender based violence. In Turkey, according to data gathered by different women’s rights associations, during June 2020, 27 women were killed, 23 women were found suspiciously dead, and at least 61 women were subjected to violence.
